Periodontal Care

If the proper preventative care is not taken or sometimes just due to genetics a person can develop gingivitis. Gingivitis or gum disease occurs when plaque (bacteria) builds up on the teeth and irritates the gum tissue.  If left untreated the gums can become very sore and start to pull away from the teeth creating pockets. This process can continue and eventually lead to periodontal disease, which is when the bone also becomes infected. If periodontal disease is left untreated it can cause bone and tooth loss and has also been linked to other serious medical conditions such as heart disease.

Fortunately if caught early enough there is treatment and periodontal disease can be reversed. This condition is treated by performing a common procedure called,Periodontal Scaling and Root Planning.  This is a deep cleaning preformed by our hygienist where she is able to remove plaque and calculus from above and below the gums.  After the initial scaling and root planning we usually like to see the patient for routine cleanings that are called periodontal maintenance every 3-4 months until the gums have fully healed.

Quick Facts
Duration

A scaling and root planning appointment can take anywhere from 1-1.5 hours, depending on the severity of the disease.

Insurance coverage varies depending on the insurance company and the plan that you have chosen. However, most of the time insurance does cover 60-80% of any periodontal treatment after you have met your yearly deductible.
